Acquario di Cala Gonone
Dorgali, Italy (Sardinia)

On the east coast of Sardinia a small aquarium is in construction that will celebrate the coastal environment of Sardinia’s Golfo di Orosei, and serve as a visitor and community center with focus on ecology and conservation.  The aquarium will present local marine habitats and diverse species.  The largest tank is a cross section of the coastline from the shallows at the shore to deeper waters. Smaller tanks present jellies and other invertebrates.  Two nonliving galleries will interpret the region’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems.  Adjacent to the galleries are three meeting rooms with spectacular views of the coast, to be used for community meetings and school groups. The design uses a large stone wall to divide the program into two parts, one daylighted with outward views along the coast, the other dark and light controlled, with inward views to aquarium tanks. At the ends of the interior/exterior spine, a sculpture by Costantino Nivola, and another carved by the Sea, mark the theme of harmony between Man and Nature.

Opening planned for 2006
