The Aquarium of Mindelo is located on the harborfront of the town and has been designed to act as an innovative visitor and community center. A new exhibition building with aquarium tanks, support facilities, a classroom and a restaurant/café, is located on a pier projecting out into the harbor. Interpretive exhibits, offices and a meeting facility utilize a remodeled historic structure. The exhibits will celebrate the rich ecology of the Cape Verde archipelago and the history of a nation emerging from 500 years as a colony of Portugal, overcoming the harsh realities of poor native soil and minimal fresh water. The aquarium will reinforce current national initiatives to enhance tourism and will strengthen the cultural identity of the urban community. Opening planned for 2008. To Print Click Here |
