In its first twenty plus years of operation, the aquarium in Baltimore has matured as an institution, increasing its attendance and requiring greater capacity for entering, exiting, ticketing, and visitor services. The project in construction expands the lobby and circulation space, and adds a new and enlarged restaurant, museum shop, and ticketing pavilion. The addition is a transparent cube like structure with transparent glass walls and a sloped glass roof, featuring at the top a river habitat of Australia, with diverse aquatic and terrestrial life. A waterfall plunges from the Australia exhibit through the lobby to the ground floor as a transition to a Maryland habitat expressed by exterior landscaped elements of a new plaza. The rockwork and waterfall, seen through a glass wall from Pratt Street and other more distant parts of the city, and lit at night, provide the Aquarium with new transparency, legibility, and presence. Opening in winter of 2005 |
