Oberhausen Aquarium and Mixed Use

Aquarium Park Oberhausen was a mixed use development proposal by CSP, IDEA and investor partners. It included an aquarium as its core attraction, on land adjacent to a large shopping center in the heart of Germany’s densely populated Ruhr area. The master plan included a hotel/conference center, a retail complex, a large format theater, offices and apartments, waterfront pedestrian walkways, a water plaza and a central water basin, created with water from an adjacent canal. The Aquarium was designed as a multi-level trip through three habitats, beginning at the top in a daylighted freshwater upland, arriving at a rocky coast and ending beneath the sea. The exhibit volume was framed by four steel towers, suggestive of the Ruhr industrial tradition, while simultaneously creating a festive image of transformation and invitation, a destination attraction.
