The
master plan, mixed use development strategy and conceptual design, prepared
by CSP and IDEA for the City of Bremerhaven, proposed the redevelopment of
the city’s sheltered inner harbor, into a vibrant place of marine activity,
commerce, entertainment and recreation.
Through its strategy of intensive year-round activity, the project
would become an economic engine for the city and region. Existing elements on site included
Germany’s leading maritime museum, a small ‘zoo of the sea’ (presenting
primarily marine mammals and birds) and some early conversion of warehouse
structures into restaurants and retail shops. The new attractions included a world class Aquarium, as a core
attraction, a marine science and technology museum addressing global
oceanography, and an aquaculture center, addressing the regional emerging
technology of aquafarming. Also
included were two hotels with conference facilities, a marina, additional
restaurants, retail and parking, a public park, and several thousand housing
