Parco Le Navi, a public attraction on the Adriatic coast, retained Chermayeff, Sollogub & Poole to conceptualize and design a new exterior live animal exhibit, in order to increase their visitor satisfaction, attendance and revenue. CSP proposed the introduction of a multiple species habitat, focusing on the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. The exhibit would include seals, flamingoes, and fishes, viewed from both terrestrial and underwater levels, to create a rich and diverse exhibit experience. Since the facility is located in the midst of historically significant buildings, strict planning regulations were incorporated in the design process. To avoid obstructing view of the existing buildings, the new exhibit was located below grade and configured with a ramped walkway to offer visitors a dramatic sequence of encounters with the animals.
