Mammal Pavilion

Virginia Aquarium &

Marine Science Center

Virginia Beach, Virginia

This free-standing transparent pavilion will be located next to the existing Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Museum, at the edge of an estuary, connecting to the Atlantic Ocean. Designed for the display of an existing collection of bottle nosed dolphins and harbor seals in a single habitat, together in the same water with large schooling fishes, the setting replicates the local coastal shoreline habitat, and off-shore eroded limestone bottom conditions. Visitors will arrive by escalator at an upper level coastal forest and gradually descend around the perimeter, seeing the dolphins and seals at first from above, and then underwater. The habitat has a water depth of 45 feet and enough complexity in its configuration to encourage diverse activity and social interactions. Utilizing training and behavioral enhancements, the facility will introduce state-of-the- art underwater viewing as its primary feature, and also include facilities for stranded marine mammal recovery and care.
